Current Revolutions in Leadership Development

Facilitated by Reverend Dr. Jim Lockard (CSL)
(2 General CEUs)
Extended Prayer and Meditation with Rev. Jim Blake, Unity World HQs

In our time of sweeping social, technological, and cultural transformation, leadership itself is undergoing a revolution. Reverend Dr. Jim Lockard brings his rich experience in ministry, organizational consulting, and spiritual leadership to explore how today’s leaders must adapt to meet the changing needs of spiritual communities and the broader world. This is more than a shift in methods — it’s a profound transformation in the very consciousness of leadership.

1. Leadership in an Evolving Culture

Today’s spiritual leaders face a rapidly shifting landscape:

  • Diversity & Inclusion: Communities are increasingly multicultural, intergenerational, and inclusive of varied worldviews. Effective leadership must be emotionally intelligent, culturally competent, and deeply compassionate.
  • Decentralization & Empowerment: Hierarchical, top-down leadership models are giving way to more collaborative, emergent, and fluid approaches. Authority is shifting from titles to trust.
  • Digital Spirituality: The rise of digital platforms has changed how spiritual teaching and community are accessed. Leaders now must bridge the sacred and the digital in ways that are authentic and connective.

2. Rethinking Spiritual Community

Rev. Dr. Lockard speaks to the idea that spiritual communities must be designed, not merely inherited:

  • From Church to Community: Moving away from rigid institutional models, there is a call to co-create vibrant, dynamic “Beloved Communities” — places of belonging, growth, justice, and spiritual depth.
  • Holistic Models: These communities integrate spiritual practice, social justice, ecological awareness, and emotional intelligence, reflecting the complexity of today’s human experience.
  • Sacred Participation: Rather than passive attendance, members are invited into co-creative leadership. Spiritual communities become ecosystems of shared purpose.

3. The Consciousness of Leadership

Leadership development today is rooted less in tactical training and more in transformational consciousness work:

  • Self-Awareness as Foundation: Leaders must do deep inner work — examining biases, assumptions, and inner narratives — to lead from authenticity.
  • Servant-Leadership Evolved: The spiritual leader is no longer the sole sage on the stage but a facilitator of awakening, guiding others into their own power and wisdom.
  • Resilience & Emergence: Modern leaders embrace complexity, hold uncertainty, and remain anchored in principle while adapting creatively to change.

4. The Beloved Community of the Future

Taking inspiration from Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of the Beloved Community, Dr. Lockard reframes it for contemporary spiritual practice:

  • Justice and Inclusion: A truly beloved community is one that centers on equity and healing, addressing systemic injustice within and beyond the spiritual organization.
  • Deep Belonging: Everyone has a seat at the table. More than just being welcomed, individuals feel seenheard, and valued.
  • Sacred Systems Design: Leadership becomes about stewarding systems (structures, rituals, governance) that are congruent with spiritual values — grace, love, truth, and compassion.

5. Interactive Exploration

This isn’t a lecture — it’s a participatory, experiential exploration. Through dialogue, reflection, and creative exercises, Rev. Dr. Lockard invites attendees to:

  • Re-envision what spiritual leadership looks like in their context.
  • Identify how to evolve their community’s culture and structure.
  • Cultivate a leadership presence aligned with emerging spiritual consciousness.

This revolution in leadership is not optional — it is necessary. And in this conversation with Rev. Dr. Jim Lockard, we are all invited to be co-creators of what comes next.

Revolutionary Approach to Ethical Leadership:  Embodied Spirituality and Radical Wholeness

Facilitated by Rev. Mary Masters, Unity Eastern Region Regional Representative
This session meets and exceed requirements for an ethics credit.

While the discussion of ethics is often thought of as an “intellectual” activity, this workshop will introduce us to some practices from embodied spirituality that help us to discern and live an ethical life in modern times.  Ethics is a Divine Idea, an example of timeless wisdom, and it permeates how we show up as Unity leaders, how we make decisions, how we communicate, and how we embody being an ethical organization as Unity ministries.

This workshop will share how we stay calm and steady in turbulent times, and how we “embody” ethical practices that meet the challenges of modern times.
