Shifting Gears: Moving Beyond “Same Old Thinking” to Build a Youth Ministry for the Long Haul
A Youth and Family Ministry Session

Would you ever drive your car without a spare tire? Most of us wouldn’t dream of it. Yet so many ministries do exactly that by failing to focus on their youth. They drive forward on a prayer, completely unprepared for the eventual flat tire down the road.
We have to ask ourselves: how long can a ministry truly last without the next generation? When you are eventually gone, what kind of legacy are you leaving behind?
Today’s teenagers are navigating a high-pressure world of college admissions, digital distractions, and weekend travel sports. Standard youth models are facing a sharp decline in participation, and if we rely on the same old thinking, we will get the same old results.
Rooted in our core Unity principles, we are called to shepherd our children and teenagers by showing the mind what we want it to see. This workshop gives church leaders, search teams, and directors the practical, strategic tools to shift gears out of survival mode and into legacy mode.
Together, we will focus on four critical pivots:
- Program Simply: Cut the clutter and invest only where you see real spiritual growth and fruit.
- Mentor Intentionally: Think outside the box for teens with high-value workshops, such as public speaking, resume building, and stress management.
- Invest in Families: Partner with older generations and spiritually equip parents, who have more direct access to students than ever before.
- Support Your Leaders: Set your ministry up for longevity with clear job descriptions, Sabbath rest, and a unified community vision.
True spiritual leadership isn’t just about sustaining the church we see today; it’s about ensuring there is a church left for tomorrow.

Janell Renshaw, LUT
After graduating from high school, Janelle Renshaw embarked on an adventurous journey across the United States for 6 years, ultimately finding her home in Orlando, Florida, in 1993. She joined Christ Church Unity in 2008, a pivotal moment in her spiritual path. Janell became a Licensed Unity Teacher in 2012 and has taught SEE classes to many of the Ministers and Licensed Unity Teachers of today’s Unity movement. She has dedicated the last 16 years as a Youth of Unity Sponsor and has served as the Unity Eastern Region Youth Consultant since 2019.
As an enthusiastic and revolutionary leader, she considers it a profound honor to share Unity Principles and guide adults and youth on their journeys toward peace, guidance, and meaningful choices. She teaches adult classes that delve into meditation, metaphysics, and other various exploration subjects.
Through her deepening connection to yoga, thousands of hours invested in personal meditation, and study at Amrit Yoga Institute under Kamini Desai and Guru Amrit Desai, she became a certified Yoga Teacher and advanced yoga nidra facilitator. During this transformative time, she received the spiritual name “Sachi,” symbolizing “I Am” or pure consciousness.
Janell serves as a beacon of love and wisdom for those on their spiritual journeys.
